19 November Assignment Love is an emotion that every individual is capable of feeling at least once in his lifetime; it may arise out of an act of kindness or something that someone does for someone that might make him feel wanted and cared for. Love is a very tricky emotion, sometimes people are in love with others that do not love them back. However, one cannot deny that love makes a person feel better in life for it is an emotion that gives people the hope to live on for another day. A young teenage girl might have a crush on a boy in her class and might think that she loves him, and for that short duration, she feels that the world is on the tip of her fingers because of the happiness that is caused to her when he looks at her. A married couple in love with each other do small things for another everyday to make the other feel special and give them a feeling of something to live for. Love cannot be seen or touched but it exists for those that believe in its power; when someone loves another person, they tend to want to protect them and spend the maximum amount of time that they can with them, making every second count. Love thus makes people happy and makes them want to wake up every single day with a view to meeting that special person that they have a connection with. This can be understood by a simple test of bidding goodbye; people love those the most to whom saying goodbye is very tough. People in love tend to become extremely unhappy on saying goodbye to their loved ones; the tears in their eyes are the exact opposite of the happiness that they feel when they are with them. There have been a number of films, music as well as literature portraying love as a feeling that brings about the most amount of happiness in the world - “If we assume that mankind has a right to survive then we must find an alternative to war and destruction. "Dont ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. We must use the weapon of love. We must have the compassion and understanding for those who hate us. We must realize so many people are taught to hate us that they are not totally responsible for their hate. But we stand in life at midnight; we are always on the threshold of a new dawn."” (King, Martin Luther) According to Martin Luther King, love brings compassion and happiness that can be used as a weapon against those that hate and enjoy causing destruction. The same theories were also propounded and experimented by Mahatma Gandhi who said that non violence or love is the answer to the world’s problems. The point of love is to make another person happy, and when that happens, the person fails to engage in unceremonious acts of waging war and indulging in causing atrocities to others. Being loved is something not many people are used to, and thus only those that are unloved and have no hope of a better, happier tomorrow are those that fail to view life under the umbrella of a bright blue sky, instead see it as a gloomy rainy day. In the movie “Philadelphia”, the character of Andrew Beckett describes the opera to Joe Miller as he says, “Look, the place that cradled me is burning." Can you hear the heartache in her voice? Can you feel it, Joe? In come the strings, and it changes everything. The music fills with a hope, and thatll change again. Listen... listen..."I bring sorrow to those who love me." Oh, that single cello! "It was during this sorrow that love came to me." A voice filled with harmony. It says, "Live still, I am life. Heaven is in your eyes. Is everything around you just the blood and mud? I am divine. I am oblivion. I am the god... that comes down from the heavens, and makes of the Earth a heaven. I am love!... I am love."” (Philadelphia) Andrew thus talks about love as something being very holy and divine; something not everyone has the capacity to feel. Individuals that judge others easily are not able to look past people’s faults and flaws and love them. Every musical note that Beckett listens to brings a sort of harmonious peace to his senses, making him enjoy himself and feel happiness through even the downside of love being sorrow and heartache. Therefore, it is clear with these examples that feeling even heartache causes some people happiness for love of any kind – may it be the joyful or the one bidding goodbye, lets people know that there is someone out there that protects and cares for them. Feeling affection is the ultimate goal of every human being and those people that fail to love or open their hearts to being loved are seldom able to feel happiness because for them happiness then comes from the material aspects of life like money. The emotion of love helps people understand that they are all the same and that each one has the same problems and issues as the other; every individual needs to be treated in a sensitive manner no matter who they are and ultimately that is what will make them feel better. In conclusion, love is a feeling that makes people feels better and happier about them as well as about life in general because it gives them the hope that they are not alone in this big world and that they can explore the possibilities of life with another individual, no matter who they are. When an individual allows himself to be purely connected with another, he finds himself connected to the rest of the universe, an aspect of God, and thus makes him feel harmony with the music of life. Happiness therefore comes from the understanding that we are as much a part of this universe than any other individual and separating ourselves from the same will cause nothing but unhappiness – like a stranger looking in from the outside.
